Beginner's Guide: How to Buy Gold & Silver

Understand the Premium

The "premium over spot" is what you pay above the raw metal price. Lower is better for buyers. Premiums vary by product type: coins carry higher premiums than bars, and small bars carry higher premiums than large bars.

Choose Physical vs. Paper

Physical (coins, bars) means you own the metal. Paper (ETFs, futures) tracks the price but you don't hold metal. For wealth preservation, most experts recommend physical. For trading, paper is more practical.

Best Products for Starters

Gold: American Gold Eagle, Canadian Gold Maple Leaf, PAMP Suisse bars. Silver: American Silver Eagle, Canadian Silver Maple Leaf, 100oz bars for bulk. Government-minted coins have the best liquidity.

Storage & Insurance

Home storage (safe) is fine for smaller amounts. Professional vault storage via BullionVault or dealer programs is better for larger holdings. Ensure your homeowner's insurance covers precious metals (most don't by default).
